This page is designed to educate people about dry sump systems and the application and installation of a dry sump system.
A dry sump lubrication system is designed to do a few things:
1. Reduce windage in the oil pan thus creating more possible power
2. Supply a more constant flow of oil to the engine, improving engine reliability
3. To supply oil clean and fresh oil that has been deareated
4. Cool the oil more efficiently
Some of the added bonus of some systems
- The oil pan size can be reduced
- Carrying more useful oil on demand
- Increased engine bearing life
- Increased oil pressure and flow to handle the greater load on the engines components.
Some of the difficulties involved with dry sump lubrication systems
- Figuring out how to drive the pump (usually a drive mandrel mounted to the damper and a bracket mounted to the pump)
- Finding a place to mount the dry sump tank
- Added an lines and fittings to move the oil from pump to tank to filter to engine
- Added weight of the components
